Day 3: Public Speaking!

Yeps, first up for the detailed blog post.

The day started off with breakfast, soon after we were divided into different groups according to out course. For us, its Science world.

Began with the Oxfam presentation, a non-profit charity organisation.

Next up was the Leadership Lecture by Barbara Cargill, a well known leadership workshop lecturer. The talk was really interesting.
She mentioned some stuffs about being humble, being confident, moral values.
A quote GaoQian shared with us during de-brief today.
"A Successfull Leader is one who sleeps less than 10 hours a day."
From past experience, the lecturer was spot on about it.
But, Ms Tan also mentioned something about Leaders need to have a lot of energy and stamina, you don't sleep less to off track to do other stuffs, you sacrifice that time to do things which are important and crucial. Dosen't mean that sleeping less makes you a leader. A point to note

Next up was this open ceremony. Not till the de-brief session, I wasnt really sure about what the "Kangaroos" were doing, what has it go to do with open ceremony and stuffs. Like Ms Low mentioned earlier on, its all about learning Australia culture, knowing each others' history. Likewise when others visit Singapore, we also would hope to show them our unique culture, our multi-racial society, applies to the Open Ceremony too.

After a short break, some of us did Public Speaking while some did Team Games instead. Im sure majority of us did both. I'm going to start of with the public speaking.

Really fruitful, another opportunity for us to stand up in front of the miniature size audience and giving a speech. Other than getting a chance for us to showcase our public speaking skills, it was also another space for us learn how the students all over the world overcome this obstacle, what kind of speech they gave, the language they use. Just for this example, theres this guy called Josh, an Australian.
2 words to describe him - Absolute Confidence. We could tell he didnt do any notes. He just went out there, gave a great speech. Total awesomeness.
Earlier on, during our de-brief, a few of us mentioned about what they had learned about public speaking, some overcomed their fear, some gain more confidence. I'm pretty sure everyone of us learned something from this workshop.
Basically, we were suppose to form our own groups, no help from menthors, under certain requirement. One of them I really liked was
"4 Different International Race in each group"
As global citizens, racism is something all of us must overcome, move on towards racial harmony.
The games was really entertaining, not a single minute was bored or "sian".
Every single game is categorised into different themes, some was Physics, Mathematics, Geography and History.
ALSO! Must Read! An Add-On I forgot about it.
I'm sure all of us participated in this mini-competition. Any noticed the host?
He was one of the very inspirational people I met till now in Melbourne.
He was just funny, entertaining, and he isnt afraid of people laughing at his lame mistakes.
*this is really something we should learn from, let ourselves go, dont be over self-conscious.*

After taking short breaks, some of us went to play soccer with the rest of the summer school guys. Though different culture, different accents, a common sport.
It was really engaging, especially playing with non-asians. In fact, it was challenging, put our communication skills to a test.

Later on,Trivia Night started. YEA!
My team was totally terrific, superb bonding going on.
Everyone was just busy participating, looking for answers.
Nice.

Soon later on, de-brief. Ms Tan said something about how she plan speeches, which I would like to share here.
A few important notes she shared, such as observing whats going on everyday in our lives. And use these examples and stories as the materials in our speech. Definitely worth a point taking down.

Ending off, I hope tomorow will be going to this Mind and Body Museuem.

PS. to those taking doing the bloggin soon. You might wanna try my method. Bedies jotting down notes. A recorded version really helps alot. After spending 2hour plus listening, while listening, we can do some personal reflection on ourselves, in case we missed out any point.:D

Plus!, if you want to record, permission! You heard it for yourselves, by right, its illegal

Regards,
Wei Jie

  1. Whoa, thats a really long paragraph. After reading it, i have a few points that i wish to highlight.

Firstly, pertaining to Josh, the Australian. Hes a damn nice guy! I've interacted with him quite a few times and he takes initiative in stepping up conversations, patient and understanding of our communication barrier and would slow down to hear your piece. I've found out that hes a local, hes from Melbourne and he shared with me quite a few local attractions. Josh is a really nice person in my opinion.

This brings me to us Singaporeans, i feel that we generally are a bit more conservative and we aren't really pro-active in participative. Through this summer school we can really interact more, actually we should, in order to both broaden our horizons and free us from our conservative shells.

Secondly and lastly, regarding the sleep time of a leader, i feel that Ms Tan is right in saying that as leaders we tend to have a heavier workload and bear heavier responsibilities. Therefore we really should rest early to allow our body time to rejuvenate for the following day. Taking care of our body is pretty important because a sick person cannot do much help.

With this i shall go to bed too~ nice post Wei Jie by the way haha.

  2. Well yeah i agree with you today was a totally great day. For me the best part today was the public speaking, as i mentioned earlier i volunteered myself for the speach. As first i was a bit nervous but in the end i thought i might as well do the speach now and do not have to worry about being called up by teacher for the public.

At the start i tried to prsuade some of our fellow nasians to join me with the public speaking but they were reluctant as they were shy and i understand that as i feel like that very often. So i thought that after taking the first step to speak first will encourage them to join me later but well that did not work very well. But it was a great experience for me.

Well lastly just want to tell you guys to join in as many things as possible or you will regret it in the end. If you try it out, you may be able to gain more experience and who knows you may be able to unlock your true potential.

  3. Good morning everybody!
its raining..and its cold..hahas. Wow, this is long post..
oh well, its ok. Now i have a clue as to what i need to blog about. :)
For me, the leadership lecture was the most valuable session of the day. During this short and simple lecture, i learnt the many characteristics of a leader. The lecturer also stressed that the chnaracteristics that were stated are not exhaustive. In addition, i think it's very commendable that the lecturer didn't use any powerpoint slide to aid her in the lecture.

Moving on to public speaking, I think that it was awesome XD I really like how some people take their own life experiences and put them in their speech.(Josh)It makes the speech more believable and more persuasive. I also found out that i enjoyed the speeches that had some sense of humor in them and speeches that are very fluent and has clear main points. Humor does help in making a public speech, but humor isn't everything. One can make an excellent speech without having to use humor.

One thing that i agree with Wei Jie is that trivia night ROCKED! :) It was the best part of the day for me because i had tons of fun working together with my mentor group. The only thing i felt sad about was that there wasn't any choir performance even though it was stated in the timetable. :(

I feel like all of us opened up more during yesterday's debrief session. We started using deeper words to describe what we experienced and started praising each other, which i think is extremely important. It acknowledges that the person is doing a fantastic job and this makes the person feel good as well. This will motivate the person to keep up the good work or do even better. On that note, good job weijie! :D hahas. Today's debrief session was really enlightening because we are starting to voice out our own opinions now. With that, i shall end my very long comment. let's look forward to the activities in store for us today!!
P.S. i like really long debrief sessions. weird right? hahas.

  4. History has shown that words are powerful. A good speech can rally the people together for a common cause and vision. Great leaders of our past and present have used their oracy prowess to lead and inspire great change. Remember Winston Churchill, Matin Luther King Jr, and US President Obama. They are very good communicators who can inspire and motivate.

Hope all of you can pick up useful skills to hone your public speaking. The first step is having the courage to try to stand in front and deliver.

  5. @Jing Yi
"Taking care of our body is pretty important because a sick person cannot do much help."

    How true. Great job.

    @Dun Kai
Probably a grammar mistake. Its "Speech", not "Speach"
Fanastic, volunteering to do the public speaking. Keep it up!:D

    @Jia Hui
    Thanks alot. Its Your turn!

  6. Hi hi...

    Greetings from SINGAPORE!!!

I saw from Gao Qian's self-made videos (kudos to you, great vids!)...it's 16 degree celsius over there, errr...we only managed a 28 degree celsius on the Standard Chartered Marathon morning at 530am :(

Anyway...good to see you guys posting reflections and pictures, do keep in coming!!! I love Victoria & Melissa's photo! Lovely...

Err...Jingyi's limbo dance will be fondly remembered by you all right?

Good to see many posts by Dunkai, Weijie & Jiahui...I'm certainly looking forward to more!!!

Yan Yang, I'm sure by this time you had already made a lot of friends and won't be lonely...maybe you will even shed a tear nearing the end of the camp? BTW, the girl who sang Hollaback Girl...she's from SRJC, formerly from CHIJ?

Benedict, just leash out the confidence you had shown in your SCOUTS, yea?

Germaine, you lost your room keys? I love what you had said, "We feel comfortable within ourselves and are afraid of what others think about us".

Well, here's something to share with you guys,

Leadership influence is about getting others to do what you want them to do, because they want to do it - willingly and well.

One AFI though: Where's pic of Ms Tan & Ms Low???

P/s: I will email photos of CHILLI (different version: Belachan, green chilli, nasi lemak chilli) to Ms Low by tonight!!!

Pp/s: FYI, I'm a visual person, picture speaks a thousand words and they tell a different story. Keep it coming k???

  7. Hi, i agree with Wei Jie and i think that the public speaking and team skilling was really beneficial as we get to be more confident in speaking and work better with other people. The team skilling had allowed us to be more initiative to approach others...

  8. Hellos everyone!
Firstly, from Jing Yi's comment, I agree with him Singaporeans are more conservative and not so active in participating. During my public speech session, I realize that Singaporeans were the least of everyone to volunteer to speak. I feel that generally, Singaporeans are more self-conscious than any other country's people. We tend to be afraid of what other people think of us.
I agree with what wei jie said about having to make sacrifices because as leaders like what ms low said yesterday leaders has to make the most sacrifices. We always has to put ourselves in our member's shoes. We have to always encourage all the members abd be positive, being the 1st to reach and last to leave.
And regarding the opening ceremony, like i said yesterday at the beginning I really didn't understand why the got the Aboriginals to come and perform because I thought openining ceremony is to welcome us. I think I didn't think deeper into the performance so I didn't think about the cuklture and stuff. Yup, So what I'm trying to say is really to think deep into things :D
As for the public speaking and team skilling, I feel that I really learnt a lot of things. And I feel that if you really feel lyk going up even if it's only one part of your heart even if it's 0.01% you shouldn't even hesitate, I think that you'll really regret it (like me...).
Lastly, the trivia night. I think that it was really great because everyone really participated when I look around I noticed that everyone really participated ACTIVELY! So I think it's a good thing. :)
And i agree with what Jia Hui said, we are starting to give better comments. So yop, I think it's great! YAY!:D

  9. wow weijie. thats a really detailed one. \

firstly, i thought that the Oxfam presentation allowed us to be more aware about the unfortunates in the world that we have yet to come across. it is a great chance for people who is interested in volunteery work to join the organisation.

next, i also find what Barbara Cargill said, about a leader having lesser sleep, was quite true. i have a few friends who are great leaders. and they really seem like they dont sleep much at all!! they have lots of energy most of the time, which is an advantage to them. but of course, less sleep does not equals to being a good leader.

next, during the opening ceremony, i was really bored at first as i wasnt really interested in their performance. however, when i realised that one of the little girls has a leg problem and was still taking part in the performance, i was really amazed. she was looking very cheerful. :D good that she's positive.

lastly, trivia night was great fun! it got us all involved. one think to take note, we have to really buck up on our general knowledge.the other campers know loads more stuff than us. so, im gonna make it a point to read newspapers everyday. it can improve both my english language and current affairs which will eventually build up my general knowledge.

yeah, i guess thats all. :)

  10. I totally agreed with what weijie had said... The public speaking seriously gave us the confidence to be able to speak in front of a crowd and also gave us an opportunity to learn from other students through the way that they speak and their body language.

And also, the team skilling games gave us a much needed opportunity to speak our minds out and get to know much more friends. Apart from that, even though we were complete strangers from the rest, we took the initiative to interact with them.

Lastly, during the soccer match, we played with several students from different countries so we had to communicate really well and gel as a team. This gave us an opportunity to improve communication skills and our soccer skills too!And... Singapore players are really better:P

  11. What weijie said today is really ture. The public speaking really helped me build my confidences in standing in front of a big crowd to speak. And how we can improve in our speaking from listening from others to gain experience.

Next the team skilling games was fun. We played many activities that need a lot of teamwork with your friends to complete the task. And we manage to work as a team with listening to each others suggestions.

Overall, today was pretty fine and i enjoyed myself very much..

    Good Night everybody!
